Hello everyone! Hope you are well!
I have two bits of very good news to share with you!
‘Terra Signing Academy’ – abbreviated as ‘TSA’ British Sign Language (BSL) Taster Sessions held at Kingston University on 19th and 20th April were very successfully received so we decided to provide another one.
Students from departments such as Architecture, Art, Mathematics, Cultural Studies and Tourism had heard about our Taster sessions and wanted to experience them for themselves so we set up a third session on 30th April 2013.
The students arrived knowing very little about Deafness, Deaf people or the language, but the Taster sessions soon changed that. For many, it was a real culture shock! Students learnt about the different ways that the Deaf community communicate and most were surprised at the number of Deaf people in the UK. For an afternoon they were immersed in Deaf Culture and language, learning basic signs and maybe finding a new passion for their future.
The ambition of Kingston University, TSA and the Terra Team is to incorporate BSL levels 1 and 2 into their study programme. This will be FREE to students. The current project will teach up to 20 per level or about 30 students overall, FREE of charge. The selection will be made from over 100 candidates. Unfortunately this means some may miss out on a place this time.
In the long run, Kingston University, TSA and the Terra Team are also aiming to promote Deaf Culture and Deaf Awareness. Many students hope to graduate in a wide variety of professions such as doctors, physicians, chemists, pharmacists and social workers. Knowing basic BSL and having an understanding of the Deaf World will break down existing barriers and provide better services for everyone.
This is a very exciting time for everyone involved and we are looking forward to the summer when this new project can start. We look forward to teaching you!
